2023 Book Club

2023 Book Club

Welcome to The Black Sportswoman Book Club! It’s a quarterly book club for sports fans, history lovers, or those interested in learning about the lives and experiences of Black women athletes.

Each quarter, we’ll mostly be reading and discussing memoirs and autobiographies of Black women athletes, of which there are many! We’ll also be reading “topical” books that feature Black women athletes.

Why you should join:

  • You want to learn more about the lives and experiences of Black women athletes
  • If you want to learn more about the cultural, historical, and societal contexts of the Black Sportswoman experience
  • You can meet other sports fans and history lovers

How it works:

  • One Saturday each quarter, we will discuss the book over Zoom
  • Don’t worry if you can’t make it live - we will record all the book clubs and paid subscribers will get access to the recording.
  • If you’re a student or otherwise can’t become a paid member at the moment but want to join the book club, message me and we’ll be able to work it out.
  • If you want to sponsor a participant in the book club, do let me know.

Guidelines for participation:

  • If you want to participate, I’ll send a Zoom link shortly before
  • You don’t have to finish the book to join!
  • It’s okay if you’ve read the book already, rereading will make the discussion more interesting
  • Bring any questions or thoughts to share in the book club
  • I’ll send you questions to think about as you’re reading or after you complete the book

Our book club is quarterly, because I want to give you time to not only find the book in your preferred format, but also digest it. This will also give me time to prepare our discussion and hopefully try to secure the author as a guest speaker if they are available.
